The National Astronomical Observatory is devoted to pure and applied astronomical research. It includes the Madrid Astronomical Observatory, the Yebes Astronomical Centre, the Calar Alto Observation Centre and the Alcalá de Henares headquarters. It was founded in 1790 and currently depends on the National Geographical Institute (Ministerio de Fomento).
